Returns a string containing a specified number of characters from the left side of a string.

Parameters

source
Type: SystemString
String expression from which the leftmost characters are returned.
length
Type: SystemInt32
Numeric expression indicating how many characters to return. If 0, a zero-length string ( Empty) is returned. If greater than or equal to the number of characters in str, the entire string is returned.

Return Value

Type: String
Returns a string containing a specified number of characters from the left side of a string.

Usage Note

In Visual Basic and C#, you can call this method as an instance method on any object of type String. When you use instance method syntax to call this method, omit the first parameter. For more information, see Extension Methods (Visual Basic) or Extension Methods (C# Programming Guide).
